Webmaster Tools Website Verification – Google and Bing Meta Tags

WebMaster Tools Website Verification made easy anyone can do it!

Webmaster Tools Website Verification

If you want your Website to be noticed on Search Engines like Google and Bing more, it all starts with Website Verification first!

Please Read the Steps twice before moving onto the next one!

However, before we get into all the fun stuff. It is best to review the precautions you were supposed to have taken beforehand to proceed further along this Walkthrough I have listed below in this Blog Post.

Please Note in Blue

(Though I have had my Website Verified, my Steps might vary slightly since I took a different approach to this, so please bare with me. Thank you, it is greatly appreciated!) 🙂

Please make sure you DO NOT have Google XML Sitemaps Plugin installed.

It has NOT been Updated in 3 months. That concerns me as if a Plugin is so far away from being Updated often, that could lead to website functionality problems. This is a huge Red Flag in my Book.

Google XML Sitemaps Plugin

A better alternative of a Plugin you would want to have instead would be the following.

That is Simple Wp Sitemap Plugin.

1) On the Left of your WordPress Dashboard,

Click on Plugins, then Add New.

In the Search Bar, Type in Simple Wp Sitemap.

As you can see below this is a much better Updated Plugin than Google XML Sitemaps. 🙂

Simple Wp Sitemap Plugin

Make sure it is Compatible with your version of WordPress also. In most cases it would be. 🙂

Simple Wp Sitemap Description

Read the Reviews about the Plugin Here!

The main reason as to why I chose this Plugin over the  Google XML Sitemaps Plugin was this Simple Wp Sitemap Plugin took care of itself upon installation, I did not need to mess around with the Settings. Plus, not to mention it was smooth sailing that this Plugin helped a great deal for me to get my Website Verified through Bing Webmaster Tools which we shall get into later in this Blog Post. 🙂

In theory and true honestly, this Plugin has absolutely worked wonders for me since upon overcoming it being verified with the Gentle Giant Google. It paved a way for me to get my website verified once and for all with the Bing Beasty too. 😀 With Bing I tried my way around many methods, but to no avail or success. It was a big disappointment. So, with my many Trial by Error Experiments trying each and every Method I could think of. The answer was plain and clear, my previous Plugin for sure Google XML Sitemaps Plugin was to blame for this.

With having had Simple Wp Sitemap Plugin as part of my Website Plugins List, I never looked back since.

2) Upon successful Installation of this Plugin, please see that when you Click on Settings and Simple Wp Sitemap, the Following Screen should Appear.

At the Top, you can Click on your Xml Sitemap Website link or the Html Sitemap Website link here.

Simple Wp Sitemap settings

3) Go to http://www.google.com/analytics/

Sign In on Top Right Hand Side Corner. It is a Green Button.

Sign In To Google Analytics

After our Website has been Verified, this is what we should see in Google Analytics Home Screen.

Click on Admin.

Google Analytics Home Page

This is the Screen you should see next.

In the Middle Section, Click on Tracking Info.

It will drop down more Options.

Click on Tracking Code.

Google Analytics Admin Tracking Info Code

Your Google Analytics Tracking ID should then be shown on this Screen next.

Google Analytics Tracking ID

Now then, you also need to have Installed the All in One SEO Plugin.

Please Note in Blue

I  am fully aware that some of you are using the Yoast SEO Plugin and I hope that the Methods I outline here can help aid you in getting your Website Verified through Google Search Console which was formerly known as Google WebMaster Tools and Bing WebMaster Tools as well.

However, I used All in One SEO Plugin because it wouldn’t slow down my Website like Yoast SEO Plugin.

All in One SEO Pack Plugin

Please Note in Blue

Please DO NOT Activate the XML Sitemaps in All in One SEO Pack Plugin in Feature Manager.

Do Not Activate XML Sitemaps in All in One SEO Feature Manager

It has been brought to my attention that using the All in One SEO Pack Plugin method of Submitting a Sitemap will most likely lead to more Page Not Found 404 Errors. Often this is known as Crawl Errors within your Google Search Console Options.

Plus, it’s worth informing you that the Submitted Sitemap through All in One SEO Pack Plugin will make your Website Pages/Posts get terrible ratings in Google because its Index will assume you are trying to hack the system with your abundant flow of Targeted Keywords.

I often wanted to switch from using the All in One SEO Pack Plugin to Yoast SEO Plugin, but upon reading the Following Experience from someone who did that, I re-thought my decision and chose to stick with All in One SEO Pack Plugin instead.

Making Switch To Yoast SEO Plugin From Using All In One SEO Pack Plugin Was A  Bad Idea!

4) We are going to Copy/Paste the Google Analytics Tracking ID in Above Picture into our All In One SEO Plugin.

It would normally be located under the Dashboard in WordPress.

Click on it, then go to General Settings.

Scroll Down and find Google Settings.

For the Google Plus Default Profile, Copy/Paste whatever is to the Left of /posts as you Login and Go To Profile of your Google Plus Account Page. See Below Picture.

Google Plus Default Profile

You should be able to see Google Analytics ID.

Paste your Google Analytics Tracking ID in there.

Be sure to have Checked Use Universal Analytics and the Enabled in Advanced Analytics Options.

All In One SEO General Google Settings

Please leave everything as is by Default and Click on Update Options at the very Bottom of this Screen in General Settings for the All in One SEO Plugin.

5) Make sure you have Verified Ownership of your Website through Google WebMaster Tools which nowadays is known as the Google Search Console feature.

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

Login with Gmail Account and Password.

You should then be brought to the Following Screen.

Click on your Website URL.

Google Search Console Home Page

This is what you should see Next.

Notice that my Google Search Console is linked with Google Analytics also here.

To the Right, Click on Gear Icon, it will drop down with more Options.

Click on Verification Details.

Google Search Console Dashboard

At the Top, you should see Meta Tag, right next to it, Click on Details.

It will drop your Meta Tag Code.

Google Search Console Details Meta Tag and Verification using a Different Method

However, as you Click on Verify using a different method as seen in previous Image Above, you shall then see the Following Screen appear next.

Make sure you have Already Verified your Website through Google Analytics first doing the previous said Steps and Click on Verify as seen in Below Picture. Then proceed to the next phase which is the HTML tag.

Click on HTML tag. It would again drop down with your Meta Tag Code here also.

Google Search Console Verification Methods

Click on Verify only after you have Copy/Pasted this Meta Tag Code in the designated Area as in

you go to your All in One SEO Pack Plugin, Click on General Settings.

All in One SEO General Settings

Scroll Down and you should see Webmaster Verification, Copy/Paste in Google Webmaster Tools the Meta Tag portion that is in “Quotation Marks” only here as seen in Below Picture.

Be sure to Scroll all the way to the Bottom and Click on Update Options.

Google SiteMap

When you want to Submit a sitemap for the Google Search Console, here’s what you do.

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

Login with Gmail Account and Password.

You should then be brought to the Following Screen.

Click on your Website URL.

Google Search Console Home Page

Click on Crawl on the Left-Hand Side and a Dropdown of more Options should come.

Click on Sitemaps.

Click on Add/Test Sitemaps. It is in Red to the Top Right-Hand Side.

Enter in simply the sitemap.xml here in the White Text Box.

Click on Submit sitemap when you are Done.

Be sure to Test it also.

Submit Sitemap To Google Search Console

Make sure you see that your /sitemap.xml is present in the Area where it says Sitemaps (All content types).

Make sure that it has been Processed properly and that there is no Issues found. 😀

No issues found is the best news to look out for here!

Hopefully, we shall discuss how to fix the Issues in another Blog Post in the future, they would most likely be 404 Errors Page NOT Found. It is pretty easy to get them fixed. 🙂

6) Now, let’s head over to Bing Webmaster Tools.

http://www.bing.com/toolbox/webmaster

Sign In using your Microsoft or Hotmail Account.

Bing WebMaster Tools Sign In Page

Click on Add a Site on Left Hand Side of the Bing WebMaster Tools Dashboard.

Bing WebMaster Tools Dashboard Side Bar Menu

Copy/Paste your Website into the URL Area.

You may Add a sitemap now or later. But, it would normally be your Website URL with a sitemap.xml attached to it.

Click on Add at the Bottom when you are done.

Bing Webmaster Add a Site

Bing SiteMap

To add a Sitemap at another time when you feel it convenient, go back to the Left Hand Side of the Bing WebMaster Tools Dashboard.

Click on Configure My Site which will drop down with more Options.

Then, Click on Sitemaps.

In the Submit a sitemap White Text Box, it would be your Domain Name or Website followed by /sitemap.xml much in the same way as how you had it for Google. 🙂

Bing WebMaster Tools Sitemaps

7) To Verify our Website, Click on Verify Ownership and you should see something like the Following Screen show up.

Bing WebMaster Tools Verify Ownership

Again, we are going to take the Bing WebMaster Tools Meta Tag in “Quotation Marks”just like we did earlier with the Google WebMaster Tools aka Google Search Console Meta Tag and Copy/Paste them into our All In One SEO —> General Settings –> WebMaster Verification.

All in One SEO General Settings

We Paste the Bing Verification Meta Tag in “Quotation Marks” in the Bing Webmaster Center section as seen in Below Picture.

All In One SEO General Settings Webmaster Verification Bing Webmaster Center

Then, Click on Update File at Bottom.

I know for some of you might understand the Process through Pictures while others may understand it better through a Video Walkthrough which I have provided below.

HI Angel it Danuta from WA. I write via your site as I cannot access the WA site and I have no way of knowing why? I have checked everything and this is the only site I have problems with?? can you tell me what is going on?

      Dear Danuta Pollard,

Thanks for the questions and I shall answer them in the order received.
You could be probably 7 days over your Starter Member Account and cannot do anything more other than work on your 2 Free SiteRubix Websites.
Even if you have had your Write Access revoked, you should still be able to work on your SiteRubix websites though.
I hope that this helps answer your questions better.

If you can’t log in, it’s very likely you are just typing your password or username wrong.

If WA is inaccessible, WA could have been down for a few minutes, or maybe your internet connection is slow and not connecting.

As I am building my first website through WordPress I found this post extremely informative. There is so much to learn with this and so much you can add. It does seem though at times that I get lost.

I didn’t realise that if a plugin has not been updated so often that there must be something wrong with it. I did install this but this XML sitemap feature. I will bookmark this post and follow your instructions. I obviously want to get a good ranking. I did try to check my site on Google search and went through a dozen pages and couldn’t see it. I will try the alternative and see what happens with my ranking. Thank you.

Thanks for a detailed article on site verification. I have All In One SEO Pack installed and the XML Sitemaps acivated. I tried and failed to get verified in Bing. Succeeded with Google. My question is this: Do I just deactivate XML Sitemaps and install Simple WP Sitemap plugin, and then verify at Bing? I assume I don’t have to verify at Google again after installing Simple WP Sitemap plugin. Looking forward to your response.

      Dear Henning,

Thank you so much for your Feedback, I really appreciate it. 🙂 Welcome, no problem. 🙂 Site Verification is one of the most hardest things an online marketer faces. However, as per my blog post article I have tried my best to make the concept more easily understandable. 🙂
To help answer your question: I would have to say yes, you would need to deactivate the XML Sitemaps when you go to All in One SEO and the Feature Manager option. Then, you would need to install Simple WP Sitemap Plugin and finally verify through Bing.
No, you do NOT need to re-verify for Google again after you have finished activating the Simple WP Sitemap plugin. 🙂

      Hope this helps. 🙂

Love this website great job once again. I learn something new and interesting every time I come here but I must say this post is something I truly didn’t know and it may be of harm to me. I have Google XML sitemap plugin installed and if I switched over will that affect my rankings in any way?

    1. Angel (Post author)

      Dear Brandon,

Thank you so much for your Feedback. 🙂 I really appreciate it. 🙂 I have used Google XML Sitemap Plugin before, but since it is way outdated and it didn’t allow me to get my Website to get verified through Bing for some odd reason, I went through several different Plugin changes to make that happen.

I went for XML Sitemap & Google News feeds Plugin which helped aid in getting my website verified through Bing also. However, I then found myself switching over once again for a Plugin for more simplicity reasons. It is then that I have went for Simple Wp Sitemap Plugin because it updates and maintains both the XML and HTML Sitemap so I don’t have to worry about it later on.

When I noticed the switch I made over from using Google XML Sitemap Plugin to XML Sitemap & Google News feeds Plugin to now finally Simple Wp Sitemap Plugin, I saw that my rankings were not at all affected, in fact they stayed the same as before.

I checked through using SERPLAB. 🙂

I hope that this helped answer your question on if making the switch would affect your rankings, Brandon. 🙂

There is so much information here and I will definitely bookmark this site up for me to look at in more detail. I have already spotted something that I’ve been putting off and that’s verifying Bing. I recognise a lot of the verification steps of verifying Google as I did manage to do that in the end, after getting much outside help. I only wish I’d found your site earlier, would have saved me a lot of trouble and tearing out of hair! I look forward to reading your future blogs. Ches

      Dear Ches,

Thank you so much for your Feedback. 🙂 I appreciate you Bookmarking my Website for future reference purposes. 🙂 Yes, for me verifying through Google was much easier than having my website verified through Bing. It was more challenging because I guess some Sitemap Plugins could conflict sometimes with getting one’s Website verified through Bing. :/

Oh, I know the feeling, I was often frustrated with Website Verification because people told me various ways of doing it. If one way did not work, move onto the next one. It was time consuming. So, when I believed I found a method that worked well for me, I just had to mention it in a Blog Post so if I do make another Website in the future, that I will not forget knowing how to verify my website again.

Hi Angel I am impressed already reading your “About Angel” page. I was thinking why I wouldn’t found your website earlier I will have joined through you in May 2015. Since I myself just joined WA this month this Year! I can relate with you joining the fight against online scam. I was too like your story but just didn’t see my money back.
I just went through all your web pages and found that site-map didn’t work. Thought might be ok if just inform you. Not sure do you received a lot spam email for Contact me. It happened to me. But it could be just me. I since have installed plugin for Captcha so I don’t get caught on by spam.

Good to see your website 🙂

      Dear Michael,

Thank you for your Feedback, I greatly appreciate it. 🙂 Wow, I am surprised you liked my “About Angel” Page. 🙂 Aww, that is so sweet of you to say. 🙂 Well, I did join WA on May 21st, 2015 and this Website was created and up and running by May 27, 2015. 🙂 Yes, we need to join the fight on avoiding numerous online scam programs out there.

I am sorry to hear that you were not refunded your money back as requested. 🙁

Hmm, that is odd, not sure how that happened. 🙁

Thanks for letting me know the heads up warning on my SiteMap wasn’t working. I saw it said Access Denied. Then, Re-Submitted the Sitemap again and it is all good as new now. 🙂

Actually, speaking of CAPTCHA, I use an Anti-Spam Plugin. 🙂 As mentioned in Step 17 on my Basic Blogging Don’ts Blog Post Article. However, I use one called WordPress Spam Zero Plugin. 😀 Just install, activate and say goodbye to spam. It works with Comment Spam, Registration Spam, and Contact Form Spams. 🙂

So far I am most pleased with its results on how much Spam it has blocked per day upon the Monitoring Report. It also has Auto IP Block Feature which I believe is quite handy. 🙂 There are only 3 Tabs. General Settings, Blocked IPs, and Spammer Log.

Another Anti-Spam Plugin that is worth looking into is the WP-SpamShield Anti-Spam Plugin. 🙂 An exceptionally powerful and user-friendly WordPress anti-spam plugin that eliminates comment spam, trackback spam, contact form spam & registration spam.

I hope that this helps you come to a firm decision on what kind of Anti-Spam Plugin you would want to run on your Website. 🙂

      Dear Deb Burns,

Yes, you are right in stating that I am indeed using a Plugin on my Website that prevents my Content from being copied as well as preventing my Images on my Blog Post Articles from being saved as well. I would be happy to share the Plugin I use, it is called Content Copy Protection & Prevent Image Save. When you have successfully installed it, the Plugin can be accessed when you hover over on left the Settings and then to the right it would say under Permalinks the Content Copy Protection & Prevent Image Save.

There are 3 Options you can Configure.
      1) Text Options. For this, I chose Prevent Selection, Prevent CTRL + A (Select All), Prevent CTRL + C (Copy), Prevent CTRL + X (Cut), & Prevent CTRL + V (Paste).
      2) Image Options. For this, I chose Prevent Image Saving.
Image Saving Disabled Message Text: Images Protected!
      3) Other Options. For this, I chose Prevent Saving Page Using CTRL + S.

Then, simply Clicked on Update Options at the Bottom. 🙂

I hope this helps answer your request, Deb Burns. 🙂

I go to Appearance –> Widgets –> Text {Add} –> In 2nd White Text Box you see under the Title is where I Paste in the Copied Code for that Banner Ad and voila! my Image appears in that Sidebar. 🙂 Of course you would have to select the Position too after you add the Code, you would Scroll Down a bit and Click on Sidebar, Position 1, 2, 3, etc. 🙂

Hi Angel. I got interested in Google webmaster tools because a friend who told me like you did that it can increase my ranking in Google… I don’t know how true it can be. But I’m giving it a try right now. And your review come just at the right time.

As for the plugin I only use Yoast SEO plugin… no Google XML Sitemaps plugin. I don’t know what you think about this?

It took me a while to add my site and make it verified by Google webmaster tools… I just don’t know what good it would for it in the future. What do you think?

Anyway, thanks for this really detailed review and overview of this tools.

      Dear Guy Nadeau,

I am glad to hear that my Review on this Blog Post Article I wrote came to you at the right moment. 🙂

I have heard that Yoast SEO Plugin slowed down my friend’s Website greatly, so I was advised by her to use All In One SEO Plugin instead. I had problems arise from having the Google XML Sitemaps Plugin enabled while I was trying hard to get my Website verified through Google WebMaster Tools and Bing WebMaster Tools. The other concern I had with this Google XML Sitemaps Plugin was that it was pretty outdated, so I searched long and earnestly for a better alternative, and that was XML Sitemap & Google News Feeds Plugin. I liked this Plugin a great deal due to simplicity. I install it and I don’t need to configure any of its Settings. Plus, with having this in place, I had no problem at all to get my Website Verified through Bing WebMaster Tools either.

I hope this helped answer your questions. 🙂

Do you know of any other SEO tricks to driving traffic to a site and would you recommend offline marketing?

      Dear Chris,

Thank you for your compliments on my Blog Post Article. 🙂 It is very much appreciated. 🙂

It took me a great deal of time trying to find out why my Website was not easily getting verified through Bing WebMaster Tools than it did for Google WebMaster Tools which nowadays is called Google Search Console. 🙁

I know that Social Media is a great way to get Traffic to come to one’s Website. Even creating a Website FB Page can help too. 🙂 You can also do some YouTube Videos highlighting the key aspects of your Website too. 🙂 YouTube Videos get indexed like crazy. The more Comments, Views, and Subscribers you get, the higher and better you rank. 🙂

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Offline Marketing since much of the awareness on anything stems from the Internet these days rather than simply word of mouth face to face. There are literally billions of people on the Internet daily than anywhere else.

I hope this helps answer your question. 🙂

Actually, it not that difficult to understand how to do this. It took me several times to get it right. It is not necessarily another Tool per se, rather it is a Plugin that helps aid in getting your Website Verified for both Google WebMaster Tools and Bing WebMaster Tools. 🙂 I used the XML Sitemap & Google News Feed Plugin, simply installed it, and didn’t configure any of its settings afterwards.

Hope this helps answer your question. 🙂

      Dear Sarah,

Thanks for your Questions. 🙂 Actually, you would need to have both the XML Sitemap & Google News feeds Plugin and All-In-One SEO Plugin installed. I switched over to the XML Sitemap & Google News feeds Plugin and uninstalled the Google XML Sitemaps because it didn’t help me get my Website Verified at all when I wanted to do it through Bing. 🙁 I simply installed the XML Sitemap & Google News feeds Plugin because it take care of itself upon being installed, I didn’t have to mess around with its settings. As I had that installed, the process to get my Website Verified through Google and Bing was made much more simpler and I was able to retrieve my required/needed Meta Tags which I pasted in my Header (header.php) File in Appearance –> Editor. 🙂 After the 1st I pressed Enter and Pasted my Google Meta Tag Website Verification Code there, I pressed Enter after Pasting Google Meta Tag and put in my Bing Meta Tag Website Verification Code. I then Updated my File at bottom and everything seemed to work great from there. 🙂

I hope this helped clear away the doubts you had on how this XML Sitemap & Google News feeds Plugin serves its purpose well to getting meta tags from Google and Bing working properly. 🙂

A very thorough tutorial on how to get Webmaster Tools verification on your website. I struggled with this initially as it kept telling me that I was not verified. This step by step walkthrough is really helpful because at least you can see what each screen should look like as your go through the process.

Thank you for this helpful information.

      Dear Lis,

Thank you for your Feedback. 🙂 Yes, I struggled with this many times, it led me to many frustrations as I couldn’t get my Website properly verified through Bing WebMaster Tools especially. But, it was a Plugin to blame for that error since it was not updated for so long. I had to search long and hard for a better alternative to take its place, and that Plugin that did the job well was XML Sitemap & Google News feeds.

      Welcome. 🙂
